Spring Newsletter 2024

Friends,

This year, Mother’s Day holds a special weight for many families in our community. Some moms won’t get to see their mothers, grandmothers might miss out on precious time with their grandchildren, and some families are grieving mothers lost due to the challenges of immigration.

But here’s the beautiful truth: families come in all shapes and sizes, and love is the language that binds us together.

That’s why we need YOU! We’re hosting a special Mother’s Day event on Friday, and it’s the perfect opportunity to shower our community with love and support.

By volunteering, you can be the bridge that connects mothers with their children, grandmothers with their grandkids, and families facing loss with a caring community.

Imagine the joy on a child’s face when they get to participate in a fun activity with a caring volunteer like you. Think of the comfort you can bring to a grieving mother by simply offering a listening ear and a warm hug.

This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate the love that transcends distance, loss, and circumstance.

April Newsletter 2024

Friends,

In just a few short months, our time at 895 2nd Ave. will end, and we will be in a different location by the start of the next school year. Although we had high hopes and planned to make this location our long-term community space for our families, gentrification and displacement are affecting us at a critical time. We believe it is a blessing in disguise.

We are in discussions with a property owner whose building keeps us in the vicinity of one of the largest schools in our area. This has been our hope! Please stand with us through this transition at the end of September. We are believing for a miracle to purchase the building at some point, but that requires a bit more time and strategic conversations with funders. We are trusting God to make this dream a reality! As of now, we are looking to lease a detached section of this building, and we hope to stay in this location and not have to transition again.

We are calling on all our friends to join us in this endeavor. Let’s spend time together encouraging our community. Stop by and introduce us to people who might want to be a part of our amazing story!

We are thrilled to have a $50,000 match from a generous donor and are more committed than ever to empowering and advocating for families. Join us for prayer this Friday, 4/19 at 895 2nd Avenue at 9:30 a.m. as we trust Him for our next location.

We hosted our annual Easter egg hunt on Thursday, 3/28, at Stanford Park across the street and had a great time! Thank you to our incredible volunteers, partners, and families who showed up to help us and drop off donations. Special thanks to SM County Sheriffs Javier Acosta, Rodney Reed, and Joaquin Moren. Thank you to SAL (Sheriff’s Activity League), Mason Lok, and the youth team, who blessed the event with volunteers. Our staff worked hard to make this event successful for all families who joined us.

Welcome, Raissa & Ana Betty!

Raissa Marchetti-Kozlov
Teacher Raissa joined us as a volunteer to lead the youth choir and quickly pivoted to making it official as our newest staff member! We are blessed to have her filling in the gaps in various capacities – event coordinator, program coordinator, and even stepping in to help lead the AEC! Raissa is trilingual (French, English, Spanish) and has lived in Mexico (Baja California). Please help us give her a warm welcome! Click the photo for more information.
Ana Betty Lopez Rodriguez
Folks around here know Ana Betty for her infectious laughter and can-do attitude. As a mother of many students who’ve passed through Generations United, she is intimately acquainted with the work that we do and has been a dedicated volunteer for many years. We have welcomed her to our team and she has jumped in with full force! Bienvenida!

2023 Impact Report

Thank you to all the people and organizations who have supported our work in 2023. We remain committed to the important work ahead of us: to keep hard-working immigrant families in our community and help them thrive!

Dearest Generations United Partners,

For 17 years, Generations United has radically lived out compassion by advocating for children and families in North Fair Oaks, Redwood City, and East Menlo Park. We have faithfully served the most vulnerable, providing essential support despite economic hardship.

Over many years, gentrification has impacted our community. GU has now felt this pain directly.

In December, we were advised that the land on which our Academic Enrichment Center sits was sold, and medical labs will be constructed on eight parcels. This displacement means we must find a new home for our center by September 30th.

We remain committed to our students and families and are excited by the unforeseen opportunities this challenge presents. We are actively searching for a new location within our service area. This may present a rate increase, as we currently enjoy under-market rent. We are resolute and impassioned by our vision, believing this move is a blessing in disguise.

Thank you for your commitment to caring, giving, volunteering, supporting, and praying for a good outcome as we move forward. This Impact Report details what we have accomplished collectively to help those struggling daily with losing hope.

Here’s how you can make a difference:

March Newsletter 2024

As we continue our celebration of Women’s History Month, I’m filled with gratitude for the many women who have influenced and shaped my life. So many have encouraged, mentored, and motivated me to fulfill the call of God in my life. This call has made me a better wife, mother, friend, leader, and colleague. I pray my life will do the same for others. It is a high calling to serve people, and so many have modeled sacrifice and a life of service to me. Please take a moment to thank the women in your life for their great love and investment. I’m thankful for the ladies in my life. May we forge the way forward for those who come behind us.

We have some critical updates about GU 2024, and you will receive our Impact Report 2023 by the end of the month and a copy online.

Important information and updates will also be shared at our monthly prayer gathering this Friday, 3/15, at 9 am. Join us, please. We have lots to share and pray about.

Join us for the 12th Annual OYE Latinx Youth Conference. OYE is a fantastic youth leadership event that I will have the opportunity to speak at on Saturday, 3/23. Join us when 450+ students, parents, and presenters unite to encourage the next generation.

Easter comes early, and we would love for you to join us on Thursday, 3/28, 3 pm – 6 pm – we need lots of help. We will be across the street from our center on the Stanford campus lawn. Details below.

We love YOU! We are grateful and blessed to spend time in community every day! Families, volunteers, partners, and donors – what a joy sharing this journey with you is. It’s been an eventful 2024 and we have lots to share in the coming days. Join us for our monthly prayer gathering at 895 2nd Avenue, Redwood City, Friday the 16th: Prayer at 9 am.

We love watching our students make their Valentines and share stories about how they show love. We launched coffee dates with moms and have had amazing life conversations. We’ve also continued to encourage college-aged students to intern with GU, and it’s been a blast to have Enrique Rodriguez, Daniela Gochez, and Yordi Chavez! All three graduated from high school last year. Generations United has also been blessed with the BEST volunteers. It’s been amazing to see the children come alive, as the center has been full every day! Relationships are formed and nurtured as they play games, dance, read, and do math and art. We also have three students attending Wyldlife Woodleaf Weekend Jr. High camp this weekend! A big thank you to Kim Yuen from the Salvation Army, who has helped us secure weekly food for snacks and additional food for the families. Our wonderful moms also make great food for the children, and our dear Sharon King brings amazing baked goods monthly and leads our prayer efforts!

This month, we are celebrating love and friendship and honoring the contributions of Black leaders and community members for Black History Month. We invite you to visit our center for “Tacos & a Tour” – a chance to see our work in North Fair Oaks and how you can be a part of the big things happening in our community. We anticipate lots of changes in the coming months, and caring friends can help our students feel secure and loved amidst these shifts. Read below for ways to be involved.

One of our favorite partnerships is with Cake4Kids, a national organization with regional chapters. Each chapter has volunteer bakers who make up sweet treats for birthdays and special events.

Volunteer opportunities

We welcome new and returning reading buddies as we look forward to Spring and Summer. Join us one hour per week to significantly impact a student’s academic success. We have weekday opportunities from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. We also need support for special events, crafts, celebrations, and Summer camps! Please consider joining us AND telling a friend! We welcome High School students interested in completing community service hours or seeking a service project during Spring Break. Our upcoming calendar is below, and updates are always available on our website.

THIS WEEK: Friday is an early dismissal day, and we welcome additional helpers to support our staff and students on this longer day. Walking with students after school is a great opportunity to get to know them and help them to feel safe as they head to our AEC. Click below for more information or to sign up.

Volunteer Spotlight:

John Becker

John leads missions internationally for a good portion of the year and comes to Generations United AEC when he is not traveling. John doesn’t just make time to come to the center and work with students, but he recently also picked up a few of “his boys” and took them to the movies (with pops Keith) to see a Marvel movie, Blue Beetle.

 

In December, he took them to the ice skating rink in SF. We are grateful for his love, his witness, and his commitmentto loving the children and families of North Fair Oaks. Thank you, John! We are so grateful for you!

Share a meal and Share the LOVE

Providing lunch or snacks for our 17 students would greatly benefit our Academic Enrichment Center. You can sign up to make or donate one time or on a regular basis. The greatest needs are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Fresh-cut fruit, sandwiches, packaged chips, or cookies are great ideas. On early dismissal days like this coming Friday, a hot meal (like mac & cheese pictured here) goes a long way to warm students’ bellies and set them up for homework success.

December 2023 News

December is here, and we are already almost to Christmas! It’s our most exciting time of the year, and we are still basking in the afterglow of our two most significant events of 2023! We had a successful Community Thanksgiving Dinner last month, inviting members of nearby churches, families from our Academic Enrichment Center (AEC), and volunteers from our various programs to celebrate Thanksgiving. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal together, and the event’s highlight was Danza Colibri’s performance.

Earlier this month, we had our annual Christmas event – Sponsor-A-Family- held at Sequoia Church in partnership with many community organizations. Please keep reading the section below, which highlights this fantastic event and details what a blessing it is for everyone involved.

With just over two weeks left until the end of the year, we are working hard to wrap up things at our AEC program before Winter break. We appreciate all your donations that allow us to provide programs for our families and the North Fair Oaks community. We are blessed to inform you that a generous donor doubles any donation received in the next few weeks! We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve the North Fair Oaks Community for 16 years now, and we anticipate what 2024 will bring. Each year is filled with challenges & opportunities to serve our community in more extraordinary ways, and we look forward to all that can be accomplished with what God has given us.

Sponsor-A-Family

We had an incredibly successful Sponsor-A-Family event on December 9. Sixty volunteers of all ages came together to wrap presents, decorate, package gifts, bake treats, and shop family wish lists. We were able to bless roughly 200 individuals across more than 40 GU families through more than 30 sponsors. In addition, we had so many wonderful gifts, beauty products, and toys donated that we were able to bless even more families through The MultiCultural Institute. Special thanks to Sequoia Church for hosting and recruiting so many volunteers.

Family Spotlight

A new family joined our community recently as recent immigrants from Guatemala. Mom, Dad, and three little girls received the blessing of the year with clothes, toys, household goods, and so much more from a generous sponsor.

She said, “I know how hard it is to leave home and move to a new country, and I can’t imagine having to do it under any other circumstances other than for fun.
I want to be there for her and the kids.”

Thanks to our partnership with caring bilingual individuals and families, we can facilitate an ongoing relationship with this family to support them as they transition to life in the United States.

What a merry Christmas for all!

Mom said “We just arrived and this is our first Christmas here. I wasn’t expecting to have anything this Christmas and this is so wonderful!”

Yesterday (12/20), we wished a happy birthday to Crystal Tapelu. She has worked as a part of the Generations United team on and off for several years, taking us through pandemic after-school programs, summer camps, and more. Now, she serves as the Social Media Coordinator and Administrative Manager remotely from Samoa! Please join us in wishing her a blessed birthday!

November Newsletter 2023

A Note From Angie

There are less than two months left in this year, and Fall is underway. We are filled with gratitude daily as we spend more time with our families. The Academic Enrichment Center is busy with wonderful student volunteers from local high schools as well as our caring adults from nearby. Our friends at Little Flock Church hosted their second annual Fall Festival and we all enjoyed games, yummy food, and lots of laughter; what a treat to celebrate in our neighborhood. We barely had time to breathe before another celebration at our AEC. Día de los Muertos is always a highlight here at Generations United; we celebrated the lives of those who have gone before us and enjoyed tasty treats and dancing from our favorite dance group, Danza Colibri. This past weekend, we hosted our friends from becomenew for lunch, and it was such a delight! We are heading straight into a fun-filled holiday season. Our Community Thanksgiving Dinner was held on November 12, and we also began registration for our Sponsor a Family Initiative. We will wrap presents at Sequoia Christian Church on December 8 and distribute them on the 9th. All the details are below, and we look forward to seeing you this Christmas season as we work together to empower the families in our community. Be on the lookout for our year-end fundraising letter and match campaign!

Community Thanksgiving Dinner

This event is a big hit every year. Where else can you enjoy a community dinner with turkey, tamales, ham, and pupusas? We shared a meal together and kicked off the Holiday Season at Generations United. Many friends signed up to bring food and serve, and we had an amazing time. Stay tuned for pics and video!

Fall Festival

Our staff and families enjoyed the 2nd Annual Fall Festival at Little Flock COGIC. We played games, ate treats, and had a blast. It was a beautiful picture of community right here in North Fair Oaks.

There were costumes, sack races, pumpkin carving, and all the Autumn joy we could contain. Thank you to our neighbors at Little Flock for hosting an amazing event!

Día de los Muertos

On November 1 & 2, we honored the memory of our loved ones and celebrated our rich cultural history with a joyous Dia de Los Muertos celebration. Thank you to all of the families and friends who joined us in sharing this tradition.
Special thanks to Sheena & the Laurel Street Arts team for helping us make frames for our ofrenda!

High School Helpers

It has been a joy and a blessing to have students join us from local high schools. Students from Woodside Priory, Serra, Menlo, and Everest have been giving their time in the afternoons to support our AEC students: reading, games, academic activities, crafts, and more. We hope GU students are inspired to give back and be high achievers with sights set on big things – just like the students who volunteer with us. Do you have a high school student with community service hours or a project to complete? We still need more volunteers (youth and adults) to read and spend time with our students after school. Congratulations to our talented and passionate AEC Staff Member, Katya Alvarado, on graduating from the Medical Assistant program through JobTrain. Kat has been connected to Generations United for many years and continues to invest in our students now that she has completed her schooling. We are so proud of you and wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

A very special happy birthday (11/17) to our longest-serving staff member, Candice Bún. She is a superstar in every sense of the word. Not only does she remotely manage so much of the day-to-day efforts at GU, she is a wife, mom, worship leader, business owner, gardener, and friend!

We are thrilled to watch Can excel at everything she does and doubly happy she is part of our team.

Every Christmas, Generations United hosts a celebration to bless the families of our community. In years past, we have had massive gift/toy drives to serve the numerous families we impacted through our food distribution and AEC programs. This year, we’ve received a very generous gift of toys through our partnership with TBC.

Additionally, we will focus with intention on the families we serve through our AEC and on-site programs. As we do this, we will match families with generous donors to provide some extra Christmas cheer for them. You can participate by providing a Holiday Meal (or a gift card) or purchasing from a family’s wish list. Volunteers are needed to help with shopping, wrapping, and distributing presents. Thank you 2023

This season of giving and receiving has us filled with gratitude for all of the love and care you have given. Thanks to so many amazing people, our beautiful Community Thanksgiving Dinner was a smashing success!
It was wonderful to have our community together, enjoying delicious food and joyous entertainment. This would not have been possible without our donors, volunteers, and community partners’ faithful support, tireless commitment, and loving dedication.

This year, we have had many wonderful moments with the North Fair Oaks residents and caring neighbors who engage with us. From the Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) & tutors to the art projects with Ms. Sheena of Laurel Street Arts, Mother’s Day celebration and Summer Camps, Business Class 101 graduations, and so much more, we couldn’t be more proud of the work that we have accomplished together!

Sponsor-A-Family 2023 brought Christmas cheer to our neighbors in Redwood City. This year, we partnered with caring neighbors to bring holiday blessings to over 50 families. The day-to-day rising costs of living in Silicon Valley are evident to everyone here, and every little bit helps during this season. So many people were a part of spreading the joy of this season to our community! In addition to those who shopped for gifts and generous sponsors who made a financial contribution, volunteers wrapped presents and decorated our Christmas space. October Newsletter 2023

As we head into the final quarter of the year, we continue to witness the faithfulness of God. We have had a year of great blessings amid some pretty chaotic times. I don’t think a year has passed so quickly that we could barely catch up. We are thankful for new staff, community events, and proximity to our families. As we head into the end of the year, we are reminded that the cold weather means reaching out with a greater emphasis on meeting felt needs. Many initiatives and events are coming up when the support of our volunteers and donors is critical. As you prepare for a season of celebration and giving, we invite you to join us in giving thanks, remembering, and rejoicing in new life. This weekend marks the close of Hispanic Heritage Month, though we continue to elevate the stories of our community year-round. Please read the stories below of the many lives being impacted daily by our work.

Student/Volunteer Spotlight

This pair has been working together for years. It’s such a sweet partnership as our volunteer is on staff at Stanford University. His weekly chats and work with his student have been a joy to observe. They have lots of fun while she is learning and focused on being successful. She has even helped as a Leader in Training (LIT) with some of the younger students. We are so grateful!

AEC Is Open

Students are excited about coming to our site daily for after-school homework support, reading, art, dance, music, and tutoring. We still need 5-7 volunteers to dedicate just 1 hour per week to help our students succeed. Of course, if you want to come for more, we’d love that too!

Join us this Fall!

As the weather cools, fall festivals pop up around our community. We are excited to partner with Little Flock Church again and celebrate with our students at their 2nd annual Fall Festival on Oct. 31.

On November 1 and 2 we will open our space for a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead/All Souls Day) celebration. The altar will be decorated and available for our community members to bring photos, food, and items to honor their loved ones who have passed. On Wednesday, 11/2 we will have a community gathering from 4-6 with food, music, and cultural celebration.

Our families have also been invited to the Zoppe Family Circus through a generous partnership with the City of Redwood City.

On Sunday, November 12, we will host our annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Fair Oaks Community Center. Impacting Tech Spaces

Angie spoke as part of a Hispanic Heritage Month event hosted by the Splunk employee resource group Somos. Our board member, Henry Villar, invited her to share about the work that Generations United is doing in Silicon Valley and offer hope and insight into how people can be involved.If you have time, take a listen to this great interview.
