‘TIS THE SEASON

We have so many opportunities to spread joy to our neighbors in Redwood City! In person or from a distance, please see below for more information on how to sign up to Sponsor-A-Family.We have already matched more than 20 families with caring neighbors to receive a holiday blessing this year. Ongoing challenges and effects of the pandemic have brought even more hurdles during this season. See how you can be a part of spreading good cheer at the end of this unique year. Holiday Blessings

Thank you to the generous volunteers at Menlo Church for making gift baskets to give away to families for Christmas! The baskets included ingredients for a sweet treat and Mexican hot chocolate, plus books for the kids! We love partnering with Serve Your City!

Academic Enrichment Centers

Students are able to have academic support while doing their distance learning at AECs. Volunteers and staff are there to provide guidance and additional help.
We are still in need of volunteers to help at our AEC at Connect Community Charter School (635 Oakside Ave., Redwood City). Can you come at one of the times listed below(1 hour blocks)?
  • Mon/Thurs 4-5pm
  • Friday between 1-4

Welcome to the Team!

Julia Sanchez – Student Support Teacher

Julia is excited to join Generations United as a support teacher at Connect Community Charter School. She has previously worked as an educator in New York City with elementary and middle school students in public and charter school settings. She is also studying law at the UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco.

Keith Miller
Program Director – Kingdom Equity Partners

Keith joins us from Vancouver, WA with a broad background in business development, leadership, and entrepreneurism. He has joined us to partner and provide small businesses support in the challenging Covid19.
Keith is Dad to two adult daughters and recently married our Executive Director, Angie Ibarra Miller.

Many volunteers have come to help us distribute the supplies and food from World Vision. Please join us every Tuesday morning at PCC. For more information contact Cynthia Nava

To date, we have given $85K to families in need by paying rent, utility, and additional bills. We have also purchased personal hygiene supplies, non-perishable food, and provided coins for laundromat services. Please continue to support our efforts as families affected by this pandemic are struggling to make ends meet daily.

Welcome to the Team!

Mary Martinez – Program Director

Please join us in welcoming Mary Martinez to our staff as the Director of Programs! Mary has been a longtime partner of Generations United and has been on our Board for two years. Prior to joining us as a staff member, she has spent twenty years working in North Fair Oaks, most recently with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activity League. Click here to view her full bio. Mary will be supervising many day to day operations including tutoring sites, food distribution, events, and more. Jackson Mooney – Student Advisor

Jackson Mooney has been a part of our team as a volunteer and prayer partner for some time before hopping on board to work during our Summer STEAM Camp in July 2019 & 2020. He officially is the Student Advisor for our AECs, helping students with whatever support they need in their school work and distance learning.

Henry joins the board after 6 years of serving in a volunteer capacity, primarily with teaching TaeKwonDo to our students but also in our Redwood City Reads program. We are thankful to have someone with his dedication on our team.

Vera Quijano- Board Member

Vera Quijano is a native of Redwood City, having been raised by her immigrant parents and attending local schools. She has walked the road that many of our families have and serves as a leader within our community. An accomplished teacher, she is also a continual learner and we are blessed to have her.

With the evolution of our AECs, Benita has transitioned to a position on our Board of Directors. We are thrilled that our 30+ year relationship has found us continuing to care for children and families together!

Summer Camp 2020

Our Summer Camp in the park was a success! Click the photos and see below for a little recap of what our days looked like. We limited the number of students per group and our staff took extra care to adhere to all safety and health protocols. We will continue STEAM CAMP in Mezes Park in the afternoons for 3 additional weeks in August. Be on the lookout for our announcements for the Fall offerings to continue teaching children. We will have one-on-one tutoring opportunities (while adhering to the Covid19 guidelines for safety).

  • Mondays: we became Math Detectives with Paige and Chris and identified the various ways we use math on a daily basis.
  • Tuesdays: we made colorful tie dye shirts, masks, and bandanas with Marilyn Lynch and learned boxing moves with Fabian of Melendez Boxing.
  • Wednesdays: Leon gave us an introduction on Robotics and how clear we need to be with instructions in order to make the robot move accordingly.
  • Thursdays: we explored the Tank and discovered its history. Jackson joined us later for an afternoon Bible study. We had fun in the sun with water balloon relays and racing down the tarp for our slip n’ slide.
  • We also made cute yarn llamas for arts and crafts provided by Heather, and finally ended our week with a pizza party!

Be a good neighbor – Read with students!

You can make a difference in the lives of families right here in Redwood City in a number of ways. We need volunteers to read one on one with students! Many of the parents of students are unable to support literacy efforts with their children due to language barriers and work schedules. Just one hour a week can make a HUGE difference in the lives of these young ones. If you prefer a virtual or distanced option, you can deliver a food box, read a story on video chat, or helping us sort through donations. Visit our website to see how you can join our team.

July 2020 Newsletter: Summer is HERE!

We are seven months into one of the most historic years in history! We continue to be nimble and effective as we have transitioned to being an essential needs organization for families. Four months of shelter in place…we are living in an unprecedented time when families are beginning to return to work after months of lost wages. We continue to empower families by providing food, encouragement, teaching, and financial support. Adjusting to the new “normal” has taken a toll on our community leaving many questions unanswered. Will work continue? Should we stay? Do we choose between watching our children or going back to work? Thank you for staying the course as we launch into Summer Camp 2020 RESPIRA – BREATHE. We welcome your prayers and financial support more than ever. Take a moment to check the July edition of CLIMATE magazine. We are grateful for the acknowledgement and of course support of Peninsula Covenant Church location. Food Distribution at PCC

June marked the start of a new food distribution location. We have been so blessed to have the continued support of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC) as we have transitioned there to do our weekly food distribution. We continue to receive deliveries from the Facebook Community Mobile Market through a partnership with Good Roots . 125 families receive fresh organic food weekly. This sustains them for this long haul of figuring out how to budget in the midst of caring for their families needs.

With the changes in group gatherings and in an abundance of caution, we have shifted our plans for our summer STEAM camp. Since our students are still in great need of academic and social support, we are planning to have camps in smaller group settings while still adhering to recommended guidelines. Campers will participate in academic activities, art projects, sports, and more! There are many ways that you can partner with us, including giving towards a camper’s tuition for camp. $350 is the cost per camper weekly and our goal is to provide camp for 144 students in East Redwood City! This means we need just over $50,000 to support this camp. Can you help?

With a new summer camp model in partnership with Redwood City Parks and Recreation, we have had to scale back the size and schedule of our camp to 12 campers per session and half-day camp offerings in order to serve more families. We are in need of volunteers to sponsor, prepare and serve lunch (to be supervised by parents), and more. Click below for more information and to sign up.

Emergency Fund Spring Break Update

Neighbors Together

As we finished up “Spring Break” week and celebrated Easter last month, we were definitely not on a break! Generations United has been providing support to families for the last 8 weeks since the Shelter In Place order was issued. As an essential organization serving those who need food and financial assistance, we have taken to the streets! Volunteers have donated food, finances, and their time to supply our families with much needed resources.
We were even able to provide 200 children with an Easter basket to bring some joy and hope during this time.

Thank you for all you are doing to help us!

We are still in contact with our families and helping direct them to community resources and providing them with much needed essentials.
